In Beaumont, a small town in the west of the USA, dancing
has been totally banned. Considered an evil which causes rackless abandonment
amongst the youth, it has been forbidden. For newly-arrived Ren (Kevin Bacon),
the complete difference between this and his former life in Chicago is quite a
culture shock.
Feeling responsible for sustaining the spiritual life of
the town, Reverand Moore (John Lithgow) is a staunch adversary of any who care
to dance. His daughter Ariel (Lori Singer) however, feels otherwise, and
befriends Ren, with the pair of them dancing more and more together. As Ren
begins to become part of the class at school, the group decides to challenge
the law which has abolished dancing-requiring that they face down the council
governing the town.
With some notable choreograped scenes of dancing, some
cheesy yet groovy music which harkens back to the 80s and an obvious love for
dancing that the key characters share, this film is a delight to watch. If you
have not yet seen it, grab it and have a wee’ gander- you shan’t regret it!
